Research interests

Quantum and classical information theory, especially anything to do with the use of complementarity in understanding quantum information processing.

• Quantum error-correction and cryptography

• One-shot information theory and operational notions of entropy

• Semidefinite programming and convex optimization generally

• Resource theories and thermodynamics

• Foundations of quantum mechanics

Short biography

I completed my PhD in physics at the University of New Mexico under the supervision of Carlton M. Caves in 2004, after graduating from Caltech in physics in 1999. (I was a member of Venerable House, then called Ruddock.) From 2005 to 2007 I was an Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellow, first with the University of Erlangen, and later with the Technical University of Darmstadt. In 2011 I joined ETH Zürich, where I am currently a Senior Scientist.
